Is Your Dad Home?

"Is your Dad home?" The voice greated me from the open door. I smiled slightly and tried to rub the sleep from my eyes. I had just woken up from a late afternoon nap on the couch and was feeling a little groggy. I was looking at a guy not unlike myself wearing a gree John Deere t-shirt and a pair of khaki shorts. His hair was cut short and he wore an identification badge around his neck.

"No, it's my place. What can I do for you?", I reply. I had him pegged as a census taker, forgetting that the next census won't happen for another few years yet.

"Well, you probably won't be interested, but I'm selling study guides for high-school students." I blink long and hard. Did he just say what I thought he did? Why would anyone in their right mind spend hundreds of dollars on "study guides" when they live in a community with a public library?
